The rule of thumb is, anything under .001 is not enough, and anything over .003 is too much. I`ve seen both sides of the scale. Under .001 will result in a spun bearing. And anything over .003 results in a loss of oil pressure. So if you can, shoot for .0015.

An easy way to look at this is, if your main journal is 2 inchs, then a .002 clearance works, If rod journals is 1.5 inches then a .0015 works.
